Ernst Happel Stadium Vienna Austria



Ernst Happel Stadium is located in Austria’s capital city, Vienna, and is one of the four Austrian football venues that hosted UEFA Euro 2008 fixtures.

The venue was expanded for Euro 2008 and currently boasts more than 50 000 covered seats. Ernst Happel Stadium is listed as a five-star football stadium by UEFA and was the location of the Euro 2008 final match. It has also been the venue for numerous UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup matches.

Ernst Happel Stadium is a multifunctional sporting ground - the largest of its kind in Austria. The sporting ground caters for important domestic and international football matches. It has also hosted other a variety of other sporting events including cycling, athletics, tennis and even heavyweight boxing. In addition, the arena accommodated a swimming and aquatics tournament, the European LC Championships, when it was fitted out with a temporary pool in 1995.

On occasion, the stadium has been transformed into a massive concert arena, with performances from famous international rock acts such as Pink Floyd and the Rolling Stones.

The stadium was designed by a German architect, Otto Ernst Schweizer. Construction work commenced in 1929 and took four years to complete. The venue was named Prater Stadium and opened for the 1931 Workers' Olympiad. However, when Ernst Happel, a famous Austrian football player died of cancer in 1992, the owners, City of Vienna, decided that the stadium should be named in his memory.
