Wenger and his Haters: What is REALLY going on at Arsenal?

The quality of debate among
Arsenal
fans has deteriorated this summer into a
repetitious bleating
about money, with the only real difference of opinion being over which area of the team most needs strengthening. Trapped in a cycle of baseless speculation and conjecture, some supporters are taking
an increasingly snide attitude
towards
Arsene Wenger
.
Last season's booing of Eboue, Bendtner and Adebayor was a response to individual performances, certainly, but it was laced with a
growing antipathy
towards a manager still rightly revered by the great majority.
It's easy to see these fans as
spoilt short-termists
, and they don't do themselves any favours by colouring their more reactionary diatribes with a snarling xenophobia.
Underlying their toybox tantrums is the belief that Wenger is wilfully refusing to spend the money they insist he has on new talent, because his stubbornness has finally overwhelmed his pragmatism and will to win. They see him as
a destructive force at the club, under whom Arsenal will never again seriously compete for major honours.
Wenger looked these fans straight in the face in May and told them:
"I do not accept it when people think that I'm stupid enough that I have £100m and I put it in the bank, because I'm too scared to spend it".
Believe that, and Wenger's swashbuckling-on-a-shoestring style of management looks irreproachable, and his strangely under-documented rejection of Florentino Perez' proposals appears all the more remarkable in this most money-driven summer for a cash-soaked sport.
But Gooners don't hear that kind of message often enough. They get
mixed signals,
with the board insisting the money is there even as transfer window after window slams shut without enough activity in the
Emirates
' entrance
hall
. Just last month,
Alisher Usmanov's lucrative rights issue proposal was rejected
without adequate justification, still less proper assurances to anxious supporters.
Behind all this secrecy lies the board's ongoing wrangle with Usmanov, and his hyper-connected deal-maker
David Dein
. Scathingly dubbed 'Fat 'n' Orange' by the superlative Arseblogger, their PR machine carefully exploits concerns about Arsenal's spending power. Throughout last season, carefully worded
"leaks"
appeared in national newspapers when Arsenal fans were at their most frustrated. Last month's
BBC interview with Usmanov's business partner Fashad Moshiri
was
scorned by those in the know
but can only have needled exasperated fans still further.
Some take the board's reluctance to come clean as concealing the difficult truth of Arsenal's current financial state. By keeping quiet, or - worse - deliberately misleading supporter expectations, the board risk making life unbearable for Arsene Wenger, a managerial colossus in the history of the club who, frankly, deserves better from all sides.
Until money is spent, or the Arsenal board explains itself openly, expect to see Wenger suffering more unwarranted attacks from within the fanbase he has so brilliantly built.
In reality, these are just
loyal fans who have been forced to play a blame game in the dark
. They've got to pin their anger somewhere, and because Arsenal won't give them the full story, they end up
making an ass of themselves
.

if the young guns could deliver UCL football, there shouldn't be a problem. now, if these boys stop developing, then there's a talent problem.

@Grabs - Great post. As a Tottenham fan, it's interesting to find out more about the turmoil that's simmering under the surface at the Emirates..."know your enemy" and all ;-) Whatever the real situation is, I would still hope that all Arsenal fans can appreciate that even though he hasn't spent the amount that the others from the big 4 have, he has kept Arsenal up there...

@Dan K - I don't know if I would go as far as to call it "turmoil", as it remains a small but vocal minority, but I hope I've given a fair picture of the tensions that exist at Arsenal, albeit from my own, decidedly pro-Wenger perspective. I find it amazing that people don't give Wenger more credit and that the press hound him over transfers the way they do. He's now up against probably the 3 richest clubs in the world (aside from Madrid), and has cemented Arsenal's place at the top table of European football for 10 years based on *ouch* maybe half as much spending as Tottenham over the same period. Btw, I possibly don't know enough, but it's always been my feeling that Daniel Levy is the real problem at Spurs. He just seems to make all the wrong decisions - I'd be interested to know what you think about him.

i gotta agree with dmitri here, aresenal will hve no problems, if ramsey, wilshere, gibbs n the young guns start displayin world class football, n also with ade gone bendtner will hve a lot of chance to prove himself as a quality striker.. plus they already hve established players like nasri, fabregas, rosicky n arshavin(and wht a signin he has proved to be).. so no troubles yet,but u never know.

Nice to hear this optimism, I wonder why there isn't ANY to be found in the mainstream press in the UK right now - anyone know why the media are always so down on Arsenal? I agree with you Samir, though personally I'm worried that too many of our players are injury-prone and relatively physically small. We lost a couple of big guys in Ade and Kolo, and unless Wenger signs up the giant Hangeland, it looks like we'll start the season 3 inches shorter than the Invincibles of 2003/4 - do you think that will make a difference?

@Grabs - I am not sure if most Tottenham fans will agree with me so I speak for myself. Daniel Levy has done some amazing things at Tottenham, but some of the moves that have been taken have also been poorly planned and executed. With Levy at the helm, the club has developed a healthy financial position as can be seen that the club still have money that it can spend, despite having spent a ridiculous amount of the last few seasons, without seeing success in return. Sacking Martin Jol, or the whole way in which that saga went down disguted me. I don't think anyone deserves to be treated in that way, let alone a man who was clearly so committed to Tottenham. But, take the Frank Arnesen affair - Levy handled it brilliantly. With the new stadium and all, it's pretty exciting times for the club, and it's now just a question of whether they can reach the next level....

Interesting. And another thing - where does Tottenham's money come from? They've never made the Champions League and WHL's not that big. Who's backing them?

Russian billionaires and Arab sheikhs aside, I think it's a question of good investment choices, sound financial planning and making sure that they never overstretched themselves. It's surprising to think that they achieved that in light of all the money they have spent over the years. Obviously, I now fear that the world will take my words, chew them, and spit them out, resulting in Tottenham declaring bankruptcy this season ;-)

yup, hangeland will be a good signing and the new signing vermalen is good, he ws good at ajax, will be good here too..and chamakh could also join arsenal, as its in the papers..but injury is a big concern for the gunners, rosicky and eduardo are players who can make a difference in any game...but are injured a lot....and arsenals defence to is too young, need more experience, if hangeland joins it wud be good for arsenal as both him n vermalen will bring much needed stability in the back, n i really wish that cesc doesnt leaves emirates, atleast this season...... bendtner has to develop , i mean hez good, but not arsenal good like henry and bergkamp..if he didnt improve arsenal will have to sign a striker too.

with the current loss of adebayor, arsenal will be needing to sign a striker before the transfer season is over, because arshavin cannot do it alone and they need a win against celtic for champions league qualification

Who cares not anyone north of Watford !

@teddy ruxspin - fair enough you don't care. Does that have anything to do with the fact that Villa won't be able to get near Arsenal this season without Barry and Laursen? I think people watch goings on at Arsenal carefully to see if it is actually possible to compete with the biggest spending clubs using an alternative, long-term strategy. Surely that's relevant for most clubs north of Watford?

Your choice Neal wear a thick coat it's grim up north of watford junction. Arsenal may well have the potential to win at Walsall. Boring boring Arsenal fans! It's the last time i tip the gunners for anything. Stop loaning players to Birmingham they crocked Eduardo lest you forget. Ah it was fun on the Highbury pitch back in "81" Good Times
