Atletico Madrid 2-1 Barcelona: Lionel Messi Silenced
Von Isaac Asante
We didn’t see much of Lionel Messi on Sunday night in FC Barcelona’s 2-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid, but in one way or the other, there were reasons to explain Messi’s strange “absence” in the game.

With Rafael Marquez and Gerard Pique both temporarily prohibited to play for Barcelona subsequent to their controversial red cards against Getafe at the beginning of this month, the Barca defense seemed weaker than ever, looking at the fact that Dani Alves, Yaya Toure, and Eric Abidal were also all ruled out due to sad injuries.

barca are the best,...messi is very good but cannot do it all by himself, thats why he has such good team mates

messi is a great player, but he still has to mature a lot... his consistency is the key... his skill and calm head is of no doubt, but we need to see a bit more balance of him... ronaldo is sparkling in every game hes playing for madrid... thats what we need to see...

naah sam, I think the thing is that Messi is really good, but this game just threw him off. If you look back, you can see that all his game in the year 2010 were amazing from his point of view. Even in Barcelona's Copa del Rey exit, Messi was extremely impressive, it's just that Sevilla were too tight for him to get the ball at the back of the net by himself (Ibrahimovic should have scored but he didn't). By the way Sam, It's soo great to have you back with all your interaction! Cool! :) :) :)

thanx bro, but messi needs to take it to another level... i dnno y, bt i dnt see him doin his best as of yet... i keep gettin the feeling that there is something more about messi... and where is his right foot..?

he's just 22,,,,,,,,,,,,,,usually at this stage most players spend their time in reserves,,,,,,,so i think messi in course of time will turn out to be one of the greatest of all times,,,,,,,,, at 19-20 yrs he took a hattrick against real Madrid when the glacticos were there,2 yrs later he became the best in the world,,not just his footballing skills but his personality too is awesome. he plays his heart out is just something about the kid that makes u feel that he's different from most footballer in the world,,,,,@sam ,,,,lol he scored lots with his right foot i still remember one of the best goals last year(dunno which team though) he controlled the ball in the air inside the penalty box and blasted it with his RIGHT FOOT from a really tight angle without letting it fall to the ground ,he didn't even lower his speed,, :)

Yeah, Prats, you're right... and Messi is an awesome player... Perhaps his game this weekend will be just like his super games against Getafe, or Sevilla :)

Akhil, cool down... Barcelona are not 100% down... They might even show their TRUE skills this weekend against Santander DESPITE having only their front prepared. Lionel Messi is still in form after all, and PARTLY, this is what matters (I'm not saying that Messi always does a one-man show or whatesoever)

Isaac - I hope you're right...but there are big big problems with injuries and Barca as it is have a very thin squad...I still haven't been able to see the Atletico came.....really want to see what happened in it.... Sam - Messi is by far the best player in the world since last season....I dont think you watch enough Barca games.....do you?

There is no such thing as a one man team. Messi wasn't silenced; a very weak Barca side was silenced. These things happen in Football. It was Barcelona's first Liga defeat this season, it hardly counts as poor form. And... they're still on top. :P Go Barca.!

1 week i go on a holiday and this is what happens.....WTF......need to watch a rerun of the game....and so many fuckin injuries....this is chaos

Hey code: 22, you're right... I think Lionel Messi is a superb player and he is THE BEST with his right foot, and AWESOME with his right foot. Although he's a lefty, I think he improves further and further as he grows up, and that's what makes him the wonderful player he currently is. I think last week's match away to Atletico Madrid just wasn't his game (and the team's defense was totally broken down), but that doesn't mean that he's bad. This happens sometimes in football, but I guess he will come back again with his cool moves/achievements soon.

one goal... i saw nani come thru 2 arsenal defenders, n score a blinder of a goal at the emiates today... does that mean he is right up there, dat he cn always do it..? messi is too much judged by the recent past. his praisers n critics tend to forget the little distant past(4 eg, messi was criticised for his failiure 4 arg in the wc qualifiers, wen evy1 forgot how good he was in beijijg) but tht is the greatest hey-ho..! messi IS only 22, and he has a lot of growth potential... THEREFORE, i say he is NOT YET the best... he is very very good... among the top 5 in the world today.... but if we were to say that messi is the current best, it would be unfair to the other pros, and to even him... messi is on the road to be a great... but not just yet... Feeling me..?

@sam ,,,,,,,lol i understand not everyone has the same point of view, some might say rooney ,cr9 others kaka some messi some even say vagner love is the best player (WTF! trust me i've heard a guy say dat) so it depends on choice. ,,,,,,,lol no offence though, but still most fans in the world say he's the best so, majority wins,,,,,,ps:that goal was an example, u can check youtube for plenty more,,,,even his all time best goal came from his right,(the one which is said to be a copy of maradona's goal)

i still dont think that messi is the best yet... but yeah, it is personal opinion... n i cnt change dat for others, n vice versa... @akhil, i do bro, ive only missed 2 games of barca this season(one of dem being el classico, wud u believe)... i watch a lotta regular football, for that matter... indian, english, spanish, german, scottish, french... u knw how hard tht is, in india... n hey code, the best player in the world aint decided by the fans vote... :P if it would, id vote for (my current favorite) gabby agbonlahor!!! shocking, huh? but thats personal opinion, n it changes very, very easily..! :)

wht im trying to say is that when fans choose who the best player is, they go for their favorites, not the ones who r performing best... for example, if there was a poll at man utd, on who our best performer this season was; the winner wudve been rooney, but in reality, anyone following our games properly wudve known that valencia, or even giggs is playin much better than he is... bt in the end, dts wht happens... even for barca, i think again, xavi n iniesta r playing a whole lot better than the messis or ibras, but then again, obtaining the tag of "best player' is after all, winning a popularity contest! (last year, xavi/iniesta wernt even considered in the top 3 of the ballon d'or... i srsly dnt thnk tht either rooney or ronnie had a better individual season than em... xavi shudve been the winner in any case, n meesi, n iniesta following<personal opinion>) but hey, fairs-fair, huh..? lol! what a joke...!
21.02.2010 09:52
Sam - I do agree with you to some extent..... heard they stopped showing la liga in India? how do you watch the games....I'm surprised you feel Giggs and Valencia playing better than Rooney, cause to me Rooney seems unstoppable right now and I rate Nani over Valencia....As far as Barca are concerned Xavi and Iniesta at least got recognized in the Top 5 players in FIFA Wolrd Player of the Year, Iniesta and Xavi are definitely playing better than Messi this season, but last season I think Messi was by far the best player ( personal opinion ;- ) ) As for Ibra, he definitely is not better than Xavi or Iniesta, but hard to compare them since Ibra is a completely different player.... All in all Ibra has not settled yet and I hope he does soon cause its high time with tht price tag....I personally rate David Villa over Ibra, but Pep though we needed a physical presence up there...

Hey, you guys have really been having some "real talk" in here during my absence at the weekend! Thanks a lot, by the way, I feel y'all have got different opinions. It's good to know your minds though... but what do you think about Barcelona's 4-0 win at the weekend? I might post an excerpt here of my post concerning this huge victory very soon - so watch out...

barcelona were excellent... 'nuff said... but rooneys getting a lot of chances... he missed two easy ones against arsenal, two against villa, n many more in the season... he is an awesome player, but not performing the best right now. nani is good, but his temperament needs to change... n i cnt tell u how i exactly watch da matches, all i can say is that i have very helpful uncles ;) (hope u dont mind) oh yeah, i see the serie a too... but its too boring, sometimes... i liked reals performance against villareal in the weekend too... btw, speaking of villareal; marcos senna's goal against wolfsburg was awesome, wasnt it?
